Being

My name is Josie and I am the founder, maker and creator of Being- a sustainable and vegan well-being brand, centred around home fragrance.

I make vegan and cruelty-free candles and wax melts from my kitchen in South East London. I’m passionate about what makes Being special:

🌱 I individually hand pour all of my products

🌱I use coconut & Rapeseed waxes for my candles and wax melts

🌱All my packaging is recyclable

🌱I plant a tree with Ecologi for every sale  I spend a lot of my time developing and planning and my goal is to eventually sell and make multiple well-being products.

Interview with Being:

Q: How has your practice changed over time?

I started with a lot of experimenting on ways to work and make with a lot of ideas and equipment but as time has gone on I have streamlined my process and realised less is more and a desk is life-changing even the most creative people in the world need a desk and some sort of zone to work in and not just have their laptop perched on a sofa at 10 pm. I also have realised structure doesn’t need to mean rigidity and I now structure my days as they come and have a general tick list for the week as a whole.

Q: How do you handle a creative block?

I used to handle this pretty badly and would just get angry and fed up and let negativity take over. Now I see it as my body and brain need a rest so I allow myself to relax and focus on other things and trust that I will come back to it when I am ready.

Q: Favourite career moment you have had so far?

There have been so many but I think opening my shop and also closing it down is one of my favourites so far it may sound mad but it taught me so so so much about being a businesswoman and gave me confidence and power within myself especially when it came to walking away and closing the doors which many people would have seen as a failure but I saw it as the chance of a whole new chapter to my business and one I was so excited for.

Q: Your Goals in 5 years?

To expand my brand teach myself new skills and potentially have more of a permanent space how that looks I am not too sure just yet

Q: What are your future shows or projects that you are working on?

I have some pop-ups I am working on stock for and some exciting markets coming up! In terms of projects I am always developing new ideas for scents

Q: How do you define your perspective of success in your practice?

I measure my success in many ways of course there is the harsh reality of spreadsheets and numbers that no business person can escape but the way I enjoy the most is looking back and seeing what I have overcome, how I handled things now vs then and small wins which I think is something most of us forget to do in life.

Q: How do you feel social media affects your work ie. scale, process / feeling the need?

Positively it affects my work in terms of networking, finding inspiration and finding markets/shops etc However I think it can have a negative impact on how you view your success as a creative and the pressure to post and the algorithm can at times feel like it takes up all your time!

Q: What is something creatively that you haven't done yet that you would like to explore?

My goal has always been to have a well-being brand so I would LOVE to start exploring other products like natural body care etc.

Q: How do you navigate the line between maintaining the line between your authentic voice and meeting audience or market expectations?

From day one I made a promise to myself that if it doesn’t feel right in my gut then it’s not for me and to always listen and stay in tune with that part of myself. It can be very easy to get caught up in what “Instagram wants” or what’s “in” right now but that is all temporary and I think coming from a fashion background has helped me in realising that. For me, I think it was important to establish my brand and core values and then to get to know my customers who naturally gravitated towards my brand by meeting them IRL at markets so I can work with them in mind and also gather feedback from those who maybe looked but didn’t purchase or didn’t perhaps feel a need to pick up my products and smell them. That way I can develop and change whilst still keeping to the true essence of Being.

Q: Favourite impressionable book/film or show you think people should see?

Gift From The Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh

I found this book in a bookshop in Galway and fell in love with it instantly! It’s centred around a woman navigating and questioning life and relationships she does this by taking different shells from the beach for inspiration. Even though it was written in 1950 America it speaks to me so strongly and I feel it is a book everyone should read
